For Sale: 1980 Triumph TR8 in Lutz, Florida

The Triumph TR8 already looked like nothing else on the road. So when you can find a version of this British roadster that has been given the right investments to look even more distinctive, and add extra power to the V8, then you know this is truly a machine for the bold. Then again, at this price, this convertible is for anyone who loves a good value, too.


The TR8 bucked the trend of classily styled British drop-tops. So it was the perfect way to deliver the traditional road-carving experience, but in a true standout package. That holds even more true today thanks to the big investment in a custom presentation. This car has had the same owner since 2006, and he really added the kind of distinction you wished the factory would have. It starts with the vibrant House of Kolors Kosmos Red paint. It's a full professional application that even includes painting the formerly generic black bumpers and rockers. Now the sleek clearcoat finish can really bring out the full design lines that would have made the car a true success. Plus, there's true tasteful English style in the tan folding roof, and this has Britain's Compomotive Motorsports alloys added. So it's an upgraded car that still keeps a very European flair. The TR8 originally had trouble finding a home in the USA - less than 2,800 produced over a three-year run. Of course, if they had looked this good from the beginning, the car would likely not be so rare today.


The TR8 was expensive when new (the same money could have bought a Camaro Z/28 with enough left over for a Chevette.) So the restored interior keeps the premium tradition going. It starts with the tan bucket seats recovered in a supple leather. And everything from the courtesy lights to the carpeting tells you the restoration was detail-oriented. There were some nice upgrades added, too. The radio is now an AM/FM/CD stereo with aux input, and the factory air conditioning was converted to modern R134a (will need a servicing before blowing cold again.) And as a true British drop-top, this is meant to be a driver's machine. That's why you have a gearstick in the ideal position, a grippy steering wheel, and beyond that is a full set of Smiths gauges - including a large speedo and tach.


Under the hood is the correct GM-based 3.5-liter V8. While this is believed to be the original motor, it also has been given a big investment in quality. It was rebuilt by White Brothers Racing about 10k miles ago. The work included ported cylinder heads, new piston rings, bearings, seals, an upgraded Erson camshaft, an Edelbrock intake, and topped with a Holley four-barrel carburetor. It's a strong motor with Mallory distributor, high torque starter, and an aluminum radiator. So it fires up nicely as the header-fed dual exhaust makes its sweet and distinct V8 tune. There's a solid feeling on the road that comes from the control of the five-speed manual transmission and the proper European suspension. Add in modern Kumho tires and upgraded Wilwood front disc brakes, and this is exactly how you want your classic driving experience to be.
